What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?
Pelvic health physiotherapists specialise in the rehabilitation of pelvic floor issues including pain or injury from pregnancy and childbirth, bladder and bowel control, pelvic organ prolapse, difficulty with sex and general pelvic pain.
Pelvic floor issues can present from either weakened or injured muscles, surgeries like hysterectomy, or from overactive muscles that switch on involuntarily when they should relax.
At Pear, our pelvic floor physiotherapists are trained to restore pelvic floor function and relieve pain in relation to:
Pregnancy - Pelvic pain, abdominal separation, leaking of urine, labour prep & perineal massage
Rehabilitation - Pre and post surgery (laparoscopy, hysterectomy and prolapse repair) and injury prevention
Women's Health - Endometriosis, prolapse and pessary fitting, pelvic floor dysfunction (incontinence), vaginismus & other sexual pain.
What to expect from your first Pelvic Health Physio appointment
At your first appointment our pelvic health physiotherapist will review your medical history and perform a physical examination of your pelvis, the nature of which depends on your symptoms.
Generally, they will start by looking at your posture, before checking specific points around the pelvis. If required, an internal examination may also be done to assess the relevant structures. An internal examination & pelvic floor report card will only be performed with your full consent.
At the end of the consultation we will come up with an individualised treatment plan that may include a home program, recommendation of exercise classes and review appointments to support you to improve your pelvic health.
